D Campbell Lyon 1930 - 2016

Life President, Alva Games Committee

It is with much sadness and a great sense of loss that we have to announce the passing today of our Life President, Daniel Campbell Lyon, peacefully, after a short illness. He had been a life long resident of Alva and an integral part of our Games for over 60 years and it is hard to imagine that he will not be with us in July, efficiently but calmly overseeing the set up of the arena at the beginning of the month and welcoming our Guests with enthusiasm to the Johnstone Park on the day.

He was our Guest of Honour for the 150th Games in 2006, having already served at a third of the Games then held, a record which will surely never be surpassed. He welcomed the Duke of Gloucester to the Cochrane Hall that week and took that in his stride, as he did all of the ups and downs which his period office threw at him. The County recognised his efforts when he was made Citizen of the Year, an honour which, true to the man, he felt was undeserved but which was nonetheless very welcome. He remained fully active in Games affairs until the last and even as his final illness approached, he went to the trouble of sending apologies to the Games Committee for his impending absence from a Committee meeting. Such was the man.

The Committee extends its sympathies and condolences to his wife of over 60 years, Margaret, and to his whole family and legions of friends and close acquaintances from all his wide and varied interests.

The funeral will take place at Alva Parish Church, Stirling Street, Alva at 11am on Wednesday 2nd March 2016 and thereafter to Falkirk Crematorium.
