SHGA FUN 800's Prove Popular

SHGA FUN 800's PROVE POPULAR writes Shane Fenton.

With no competitive strides taken on any of the Highland Games grass tracks this summer owing to the cancellation of all Games due to the Covid-19 situation it has been a frustrating few months for athletes up and down the country who would normally be competing every Saturday and Sunday from mid May until mid September.

To combat the lack of action the SHGA came up with the idea to run a 'Fun 800 metres Handicap' for Open competitors back in June. It proved to be a success, and with Youth athletes asking where was there race it was decided to run both an Open and Youth race in July. Once again they proved popular and have been repeated for August with increased numbers  in the Youth race. 26 runners are down to contest the Youth race including winners from the Games circuit last summer, Erin McFarlane and Caleb McLeod Pitreavie AC and Lucy Denholm and Daniel Docherty Clydesdale AC..

The runners more or less handicap themselves, the handicaps are in seconds based on times submitted in their trial runs, although it's a bit of fun with no prizes, a bit of honesty is required from the athletes to make it work properly. The 800 metres can be run on any terrain, competitors however must use the same course for their competitive run as they did for their trial. The previous two races have worked quire well and would have produced good finishes going by the times.

This weekend looks good weather wise so hopefully many will take the opportunity to geet out and do their competitive run.. When completed tines should be forwarded to ig2shga@gmail.com

If successful the races maybe repeated in September
