ALLAN HAMILTON BREAKS 104 YEAR RECORD AT OBAN

The amazing record breaking season on the highland games circuit by jumper Allan Hamilton continued at the Argyllshire Games at Oban.
The Edinburgh AC member smashed both the long jump and high jump ground records ata sun kissed Mossfield Park. His leap of 22' 4.5'' in the long jump broke a record of 104 years held by Hugh McCaskill of Kilmartin who had jumped 21' 10.5'' in 1912.
Similar to Crieff Games 4 days earlier the high jump caught the imagination of the crowd who clapped up Allan in all his jumps. Once the new ground record had been set at 1.96m the bar was set at 2m where he had four further jumps to break the Scottish record of 1.99m, three in normal competition and one for being winner of the competition, however despite the urgings of the big crowd it was not to be on this occasion. Having already broken both the Long and Triple Jump Scottish records this season Allan was keen to add the high jump record as well, he will have two further opportunities at Braemar and Pitlochry. To complete another good day, Allan also won the triple jump [45' 5''] and the scratch 100 metres[11.61s].
Scotland's top ranked pole vaulter Jax Thoirs finished runner up in all four events.
Rory Muir ,Aberdeen AC who had just returned from Rio where he had been supporting his sister Laura landred a double at Oban with victory from the backmark in the Open 3200 metres handicap[9:34.13] and scratch 800 metres[2:01.8]
The Open 100 metres Handicap was won by Lee Goodfellow,TLJT[13.5] who just held on to edge out Jax Thoirs[6] and Ben Coates[10] in 10.29s, this win strengthens the Earlston runners grip on the SHGA sprint league title.
Ewan and Donald Bradley,Inverness followed up their wins at Crieff with victory in the Open 200 metres and 800 metres handicaps respectively, in the 200 metres Ewan got up close home to inch out David Lauder,Hawick and Ben Coates,Oban in 21.89s with Donald staying on strongly down the home straight in the 800m to overhaul Wallace McGown,Sauchie with Dean Whiteford,Innerleithen in third.
Craig Bell,Forfar who is enjoying one of his better seasons produced a determined run from the front mark to win the Open 1600 metres Handicap from Donald Bradley and Jamie Crowe,Central AC. The latter was a good winner of the Hill Race, returning to the park 200 metres clear of hill running veteran Colin Donnelly with previous years winner Tom Smith,Oban in third, Alison McVicar took the women's title.
There was a big field of 10 competitors in the heavy events which made for exciting competition. There was also a ground record, with Lorne Colthart throwing the 56lb out to a distance of 42' 8''. Both the hammer contests were closely contended, the 16lb hammer saw Scott Rider edge out Lorne Colthart by a mere 2 inches with a throw of 140' 9'', Scott also won the 22lb hammer this time throwing to a distance of 116' 5'', Lorne Colthart was again second, Kyle Randalls took third place in both.
Rider also won the 16lb shot, in another close affair his throw of 55'5'' was 5'' better than Lukasz Wenta who reversed the placings in the 22lb shot. Lukasz and Scott shared first place in the 56lb for height both throwing 16' before Scott went on to win the Caber.
