145th NEW YEAR SPRINT

145th New Year Sprint

The 145th New Year Sprint is due to be held at Musselburgh Racecourse, 6 miles east of Edinburgh, on Tuesday 31st December 2013 and Wednesday 1st January 2014. The running will take place on the outer horse racing circuit used for flat racing, in front of the Queen's Stand.

The heats of the New Year Sprint, and all rounds of the supporting events, will be held on the Tuesday. The Sprint semi-finals and final on the Wednesday will be incorporated into the traditional New Year National Hunt horse-racing meeting. The Sprint final is due to be televised as part of Channel 4's coverage of the day's events.

The first prize of £4000 makes the Sprint by far the richest race in the professional calendar, reinforcing the event's position as the sport's premier event.

The promoter is putting up a staggering £20,000 bonus for any scratch runner who can beat the World Professional Record of 11.14 secs over 120 yards (approximately 110 metres) set by the great George McNeill back in 1970. A time of 11.24 secs will earn a £2000 reward and a time of 11.34 secs will earn a £1000 bonus.

The Sprint is supported by a series of Open foot-races from 90 metres up to 4 furlong (880 yards, approx 800 metres) and Youths foot-races from 60 metres to 4 furlong.

The 4 furlong races, which made their debut last year, will be held entirely on the straight.

Although the New Year Sprint has by tradition been a professional event, the meeting has been sanctioned by British Athletics and Scottish Athletics for competition by amateurs, who may keep any prize money won.
