TOP SCOTS ATHLETES IN WINNING FORM AT OBAN

Despite the frequent heavy showers interupting proceedings the Oban Games once again provided the spectators with some excellent competition.
The very first event, the 3200 metres handicap, saw a quality run from Scotland's top ranked 3k and 5k athlete Andrew Butchart, Central AC, running from the scratch mark, Butchart powered his way through the field before going on to break the tape in 9m 44.7s. Dean Whiteford,Innerleithen finished runner up with Matthew Turner, Campeltown in 3rd.
The scratch 800 metres was won in fine style by Rory Muir, Dundee Hawkhill who forged clear with 200 metres to run, Butchart finished runner up with Turner once again in 3rd place. Muir's winning time was 2:07.86.
Three form runners filled the first three places in the Open 800 metres handicap where victory went to Willie Bates,Tullibody who broke the tape in 2:05.01, chasing him over the line was Wallace McGown,Sauchie and Dean Whiteford,Innerleithen. The latter two athletes also won races on the day, Whiteford was the victor in the 1600 metres handicap where he overhauled front marker Sam Bates,Tullibody with only 40 metres to run with Rory Muir finishing fast into 3rd place.
There was a close finish to the 200 metres where Wallace McGown got the verdict in 22.88 from Ben Coates, Edinburgh AC and Lee Goodfellow, TLJT. Coates went one better in the 100 metres handicap, hitting the line in 11.08 from the rapidly closing backmarker David Martin VP Glasgow with Lee Goodfellow again 3rd.
Martin, who is Scotland's top ranked 400 metres hurdler had a profitable afternoon with a hat trick of wins, Firstly he won the 100 metres scratch race in 11.61s from Ben Coates and Conor Henderson. He followed that up by racing to victory from the back mark in the 400 metres in 52.89, he was chased home on this occasion by Erin Leggate, East Kilbride and Conor Henderson. In between the 2 running events Martin was also the victor in the Long Jump.
The Women's scratch 100 metres was won by Erin Leggate from Chloe Mason and Laura McCracken.
There was a triple tie in the High Jump with Connor Henderson, Ben Coates and Cameron Clark all clearing 1.65m. The latter was also the victor in the triple jump.
The heavy events attracted a good field of competitors and it was Sebastien Wenta from Poland who emerged the overall winner, he had wins in the 22lb hammer, 28lb for distance and 56lb for height and distance. Lukasz Wenta claimed three wins, 16lb and 22lb shot as well as the caber. Lorne Colthart thwarted the Wenta clean sweep by winning the 16lb hammer.
