THOMSON IN WINNING FORM 'DOWN UNDER'writes Shane Fenton

Highland Games stalwart John Thomson from Coaltown of Balgonie is currently enjoying a fine vein of form competing on the Victorian Athletics League circuit in Australia.

John is currently in the middle of his three week trip 'Down Under' and has already tasted victory at both meetings he has competed at to date.
 
On Sunday 4th March, Thomson was in action at the Marybyrnong Gift at the Pennel Reserve, Braebrook.
Running from a start of 250 metres in the $500 1600 metres Handicap he raced to victory, coming home ahead of 27 rivals to cross the finish line in 4 minutes 20.215 seconds.
 
His next stop was the higher profile Bendigo Gift meeting on Sat/Sun [10th/11th March] at the Tom Floods Sports Centre, Bendigo. On this occasion he was in the 27 runner line-up for the $1000 Frontmarkers 1600 metres Handicap.
Once again the Fifer turned in an excellent performance to again claim victory, stopping the clock at 4 minutes 37.132 seconds from his start of 70 metres.
 
This Saturday [17th Mar] John moves on to Burramine for the Burramine Gift in Yarrawonga.
Again he will contest the Open 1600 metres Handicap where he has been allocated a start of 230, metres a 20 metres'pull' for his recent wins.
 
John has been a regular on the Highland Games circuit over the years and has won in the region of 130 races.
Since turning 50 a few years ago he has also won Masters titles at Scottish, British and European level.
