SCOTTISH HEAVY EVENTS CHAMPIONSHIP[Report & Results]

RIDER REGAINS SCOTTISH TITLE IN CRIEFF THRILLER

Shane Fenton reports from Market Park

One of the most closely contested Scottish Heavy Events Championships in recent years took place at Crieff Highland Games on Sunday.

With the crowd inthe region of 5000 witnessing throwing of the highest quality from the assembled international field.

The 16lb and 22lb hammer events got the championship  off and running.

American highland games champion Matt Vincent launched the 16lb out to 138'2'', almost 7 feet clear of 2nd placed Kyle Randalls who is one of the young rising stars on the Scottish circuit.

Vincent had to settle for 2nd place in the heavier 22lb event when he was out thrown by 2 feet by former World's Strongest Man runner up Sebastien Wenta of Poland who has been a regular on the Scottish circuit over the past few years. Sebastien won with a throw of 115'2'' Matt threw 113'2'' to pip the 2013 Scottish champion Craig Sinclair by 3 inches for 2nd place..

Next up was the 28lb for distance which was won by Matt Vincent with a throw of 84'6.5'' which was a foot further than runner up Scott Rider from England who last month won the SHGA World title at the Loch Lomond Games. Scott also represented England in the shot putt at the recent Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Both the 16lb and 22lb shot putt competitions were won in some style by former Commonwealth Games gold medalist Burger Lambrechts from South Africa, he won the 16lb with a massive 61'5'' and sent the 22lb out to 52'5''. Scott Rider finished in 2nd place on both occasions.

There was a thrilling 56lb for height competition and it ended with a tie for 1st place between Matt Vincent and Scott Rider who both cleared 16'.

The destination of the Scottish title all came down to who came out best in the caber between Vincent and Rider and it was the latter who prevailed when he showed why he is the current World caber champion by successfully tossing the Crieff Challenge caber to win both the individual competition and the overall Scottish title which he last won in 2012.
