EAST KILBRIDE'S GREG KELLY WINS £1000 SPRINT AT MARKINCH writes Shane Fenton

Greg Kelly East Kilbride AC won the £500 first prize In the 90m Invitation Sprint at the sun bathed Markinch Highland Games on Sunday, in a photo finish Kelly edged out David Brand Dunfermline Track Club and Jedburgh's Eion Lowther in 10.50 seconds. The Women's 90m Invitation was won by Sarah Bassett, Whitemoss AC with Davy Rae Hawick and Euan Smith Central AC taking the veteran and youth invitations.

There was a thrilling finish to the Open 90m handicap with David Brand getting the verdict over Greg Kelly and Liam Halliday, Central AC. Dundee Hawkhill's Rory Muir was the victor in the 200 metres with Marcus Archer Pitreavie AC claiming the 400m after a ding dong battle with Ross Friel, Glenrothes.

There was a good field of 12 runners for the 800 metres but no one got a blow in against runaway winner Carl Furhmann Banchory Stonehaven. Pitreavie runners were victorious in the 1600mts and 3200mts through Tyler White and Rebecca Burns.

Three ground records were broken in the throwing events Lukasz Wenta in the 22lb shot with Kyle Randalls setting new figures in both the 16lb and 22lb hammer events. The Scottish 8000 metres Cycle championship title went to Dougie Shaw Edinburgh, after a few years away Tim Allan Tomatin made a winning return in the Deil.
