DESPITE THE COLD, COMPETITION HOT AT CUPAR writes Shane Fenton
The sunshine of the opening two weekends of the season at Blackford and Markinch was a distant memory as competitors and spectators alike had to dig out the winter woolies at Duffus Park for the Cupar Highland Games.
Despite the cold, the action in the track and field events was hot. Rory Muir, Dundee Hawkhill followed up his 200m win at Markinch with victory in the 100 metres handicap, edging out Cameron Smith, Central AC and Willie Bates, Tullibody in 10.57 seconds. Muir went on to land a double emerging victorious in a well contested 800 metres handicap in 1:55.11 from Michael Burns, Pitreavie AC with Willie Bates in third.
A double was also recorded by Burns in the 200 metres and 400 metres handicaps, in the 200m the Pitreavie runner broke the tape in 19.52 seconds, Cameron Smith again had to settle for the runners up berth with Rory Muir in third.
The concluding 400 metres handicap saw the biggest field of the day with Burns coming through the field to win in 57.02 seconds, from Rory Muir and Craig Robertson, Pitreavie AC. The latter produced a fine run from the backmark to win the 1600 metres handicap overhauling eventual runner up and front marker John Bates ,Tullibody on the last lap with the consistent Rory Muir in third. Craig's winning time was 4:33.34.
One of the best performances of the day came from Owen Millar, Dunfermline Track Club in the 800 metres handicap for athletes with a learning disability. Running from the scratch mark in unfavorable conditions and on a grass track Owen stopped the clock at 2 minutes 04.69 seconds, runner up was last weeks Markinch 900m winner Carl Fuhrmann, Banchory Stonehaven AC with Fraser Armstrong, Red Star Glasgow and Ian Urquhart, Aberdeen Metro 3rd & 4th respectively.
With the games clashing with the Scottish Schools Championships the entry for the youth events was down from previous years. Sean Bates Tullibody was the victor in the 90 metres from Elle Eboji,Kirkcaldy and Lucas Allan Tomatin. There was a games debut win for Cameron Dow, Pitreavie AC in the youths 800 metres from Sean Bates and Ellie Ejobi.
Eight competitors contested the Open cycling events, Gus Gillies, Peebles emerged the overall winner with two wins and two seconds, the opening 800 metres was won by Matthew Ball, Linlithgow from Gillies and Ian Hepburn, Cairneyhill. Gillies then took out the 1600 metres from Tim Allan, Tomatin and Dougie Shaw, Edinburgh. Shaw then got on the winners podium in the 3200 metres with Gillies runner up and Ball third. The bikers final event was the Deil which was won by Gillies from Allan and James Melville, Dumbarton.
Unfortunately, similar to the youth runners the biking youngsters were also engaged in a competition elsewhere over the weekend and the only rider in attendance was Marco Caira, Markinch who reveived a walk-over in both the youth 800 metres and 1600 metres races. He will also be awarded the full compliment of points in the youths cycling league.
James Dawkins, Jamie Gunn, Bruce Robb, Stuart Anderson, Lorne Colthart, Greg and Dale Walker was the 7 man line up for the heavy events, Lorne Colthart had a field day, when i left, with only the weight for height to be contested he had already won the light and heavy shot putt, light and heavy hammer, weight for distance and caber.
