CLEAN SWEEP SEES RIDER RETAIN SCOTTISH TITLE

Scott Rider retained the Scottish Heavy Events title with one of the best all round throwing performances seen on the games circuit for many a year. Rider who has represented GB in the Olympic Games and England three times in Commonwealth Games produced an unblemished exhibition of throwing which saw him win all seven disciplines. His feat had the followers of the throwers scurrying to check the record books to see if this had ever been achieved before in the prestigious Scottish Championship. For the record these were Scott's winning distances, 16lb shot[57'10''],22lb shot[47'11.25''],16lb hammer[139'1''],22lb hammer[117'0''],28lb distance[86'0''],56lb height[16'] plus the caber. Scott was also given extra throws in some events to attempt ground records but fell just short on this ocassion.
The overall points tally for Rider was 42 with Lukas Wenta 28pts just edging Lorne Colthart 27pts for second place.
The other Scottish title up for grabs was the SHGA Light Field Championship which was won in record breaking style by Allan Hamilton. The Edinburgh AC athlete who took the Scottish Athletics Long Jump title the previous weekend won all three events at Market Park with new ground records in the Long Jump and Triple Jump. He won the opening High Jump with a leap of 1.80m that was followed by a Long Jump of 6.64m and a Triple Jump of 14.20m. Jax Thoirs,Glasgow finished runner up in all three events. It was great to hear the crowds right round the ground clapping up both Scott Rider and Allan Hamilton as they made their respective record breaking attemps. To complete a great weekend for Hamilton he also raced to victory in Open 90 metres handicap which carried a first prize of £300, running from the scrath mark and giving away starts up to 30 metres he won both his heat and cross tie before flying up the track in the final to to snap the worsted in 9.61 seconds to deny Kevin Turner,Dalkeith [19m] and Greg Turnbull,Jedburgh[5.5m]. Turner who had won the same race 30 years prior as a 21 year old also had to settle for second place in the Open 200 metres Handicap, running from the 41 metres mark he was collared on the line by Charlie Carstairs, Newtongrange[18m] with Willie Bates,Tullibody[28m] in third.
Inverness father and son Donald and Ewan Bradley landed a 400 metres and 1600 metres double, Ewan[40m] who had competed at the Scottish Athletics age-group championships in the morning at Grangemouth led home a big field of 15 runners in the Open 400 metres Handicap, Graeme Armstrong,Edinburgh[79m] stayed on gamely for second place with Greg Turnbull[21m] in third.
Veteran Donald, turned the clock back with a vintage performance to win the Open 1600 metres Handicap, coming off the final bend anyone of a handful of runners could have won the race but it was Bradley[210] who found the extra gear to outstay Fraser Logan,Belgrave[190m] and Craig Bell,Forfar[240m] in the race to the finish.
The Open 800 metres Handicap resulted in a photo finish, and following a lengthy deliberation from the judges it was Dean Whiteford,Innerleithen[65m] getting the verdict over Wallace McGown,Sauchie[115m] with Donald Bradley[95m] in third.
There was a Borders 1 – 2 – 3 in both the Youth's 90 metres and 200 metres Handicaps, Ben Lyall,Kelso[11m] took the 90m in 10.21 from Matthew Newman,Hawick[9.5m] and Shelly Fojcik,Jed AC[26.5m]. Ewan Hood,Peebles [23m] produced a strong run down the home straight to win the 200 metres snaring Brodie Cowan,Jed AC[34m] on the line with Matthew Newman[21m] in third.
There was a thrilling finish to the Youth's 1600 metres Handicap with Gaspard Lecrivain,Aberdeen[275m] pipping long time leader Clover De-Jong,Amulree[310m] on the line, SHGA Youth's league leader Sean Bates ,Tullibody[160m] came through late to take third place.
Seven bikers contested the four cycle races on the card, there was doubles for Paul Gallacher,Kirkcaldy and Charles Fletcher,Grantown on Spey, the latter won the 3200 metres Handicap and the Deil tak the Hindmost with Gallacher the victor in the 800 metres and 1600 metres Handicaps.
